Genesis
The Video Show DVD
Review by Larry Toering
I am not the most dedicated Genesis fan on the planet, but not the least either, and I do have quite a few of their live videos, but this is a set containing 32 clips. To explain my preferences concerning this band, I would have to say the Steve Hackett stuff is by far my choice for favorite material of theirs. But it certainly wasn't their most well received period. The clips date as far back as 1976, and take the viewer through the entire gammut from that point on, and it's a killer collection that way. One of the best things about it is that the sound on these videos is massively improved through an oustanding multi-channel upgrade, and that is some staggering work if you ask me. Not only was this done, but it was done incredibly well. Maybe one or two of them resulted in not so great of a result for everyone, but it weighs much more for the improvement department than against it.If you like watching MTV clips and the like, this is a must buy. While it doesn't contain more than one version of each clip, as some of them did have more than one, it manages to succeed without losing anything there, even for hard core followers of Genesis. Most people who love this band would demand Peter Gabriel here, but we all know that period was too early for inclusion, for the most part. Still, they did include one video from that period, which is better than nothing in putting together such a vast collection. Although it really follows more of the commercial stuff, that is a given because they had a lot of hits. It goes a long way in presenting the most popular material they recorded over the years, and serves as a great souvenir of it.
