Bob Dylan

1966-1978 After The Crash DVD

Review by Gary Hill

What an interesting set this is. It’s obvious this is unofficial, but it’s also in-depth. In a lot of ways Bob Dylan might be one of the most controversial musicians of all time. I mean, in the way that his audience built up expectations that Dylan seemed hell-bent on crashing, you really don’t get a more volatile artists. So many artists seem to try to live up to fan expectations. Not Dylan. They seemed like sacred cows that he went about slaying. This documentary gives a lot of information about a key period of Dylan’s career. There’s also a sideline where a guy named Weberman dug through his trash and eventually worked that (through a tense – at best – relationship) into an interview. Weberman talks about the events surrounding that controversy here. But, interestingly enough, the interview is included in a separate audio CD as a bonus to this version of the DVD. This is pretty cool stuff, indeed.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2013  Volume 2 at lulu.com/strangesound.
