JJ Grey & Mofro

Brighter Days DVD

Review by Gary Hill

Do you remember the days of the concert film? You know, the movies that were one part live performance and one part documentary? This video is a modern version of that concept. And, it’s quite cool. I suppose that sort of concept is appropriate because Grey’s music is sort of a modern take on an old concept. I mean, he’s blues more or less, but more the modern form of blues than the old traditional stuff. There’s a horn section and a Hammond B3 to ground it all with retro elements. There is plenty of R&B, soul and even some Southern rock built into this sound. This guy is talented and so is his band. If you are familiar with them, you don’t need much prodding to know you want this. If you’ve never heard Grey, this would be a great introduction. Both the sound and video are excellent and this is well worth having.
