Dio

Finding the Sacred Heart: Live in Philly 1986 DVD

Review by Gary Hill

I wasn’t really a big fan of Dio solo in the day. I mean, I liked him in Rainbow and in Black Sabbath. I admired his voice, but I felt his albums seemed a little generic and cheesy in some ways. Well, after watching this DVD, I’d have to say that I was mistaken in not giving him more due in terms of solo work. His performance here is nothing short of spectacular. The mix of Dio songs with songs from those two bands in which he performed makes it a great set list. The video and audio are a function of the time, though. That means they are clearly not up to modern standards. The one thing that really annoys me about this DVD is that the audio doesn’t feel like it fits the video. It leads me to wonder how much in studio stuff was done to the audio track. It almost seems like the audio track is sort of added to the video feed after the fact to me. Still, when the performance is this good, you can only complain so much, really.
