83 US Festival: Days 1-3 DVD

Review by Gary Hill

I wanted this to be a lot better than it is. That’s not to say it’s not worth having. It’s just that it could have been better. The line up of bands is impressive and the performances are for the most part great. The documentary parts talking about the show are pretty interesting, too. Still, the whole thing feels like a relic of its time. It seems very MTV, like. That makes it quaint and cute, but perhaps a little cheesy, too. The main problem, though, is that Mark Goodman comments on performances, often in the middle of the performances. That could have been solved by an option to check out the performances without the commentary, but that doesn’t exist. I’d still recommend having this for the performances that are here. Let’s just hope they get it right and put out a better version at some point in time. For reference, artists on the first day who are featured here are: Divinyls, INXS, The English Beat, Stray Cats, Men at Work and The Clash. Only three artists from Day Two are included: Judas Priest, Triumph and Scorpions. The final days includes Berlin, Quarterflash, U2, Missing Persons, Stevie Nicks and a return performance from Triumph.
