Carl Palmer

Decade: 10th Anniversary Celebrating the Music of Emerson Lake & Palmer DVD

Review by Gary Hill

I have to say that I truly respect Carl Palmer’s vision. I mean, the obvious route would be to put together an ELP like band and do faithful versions of the music. That’s not what Palmer has done, though. Instead, he’s assembled essentially a power trio with two younger guys on guitar and bass. That means they have to create new interpretations of the music. It keeps it fresh. This is heavier and more modern in texture. There’s no question about that. If you come looking for an ELP concert you might be disappointed. I’d put forth, though, that this is more vital and exciting. It allows the melodies and musical concepts of ELP to be heard, but with new ears and a new musical vision. The video and audio here are both quite good and this performances are exceptional. There are interviews included with both the guitarist and bass player. ELP purists will probably avoid this. Those looking for a great new experience, though, will find plenty to like here. I love it.
