Grant Hart

Every Everything: The Music, Life & Times of Grant Hart DVD

Review by Gary Hill

I was never a huge fan of Hüsker Dü. I mean, I’d heard them. I think we even covered them at one time or another in one of my bands. I never really followed their careers or stories. I never owned anything by them. Grant Hart was one third of the band and has gone on to do other things since then. That’s just one small part of the story of who he is, though. This DVD is essentially nothing but a long interview with Grant Hart. Other than the voice of an interviewer and some clips and things, that is the one constant here. The story doesn’t really follow a straightforward line of any kind, but rather seems to wander through Hart’s life and mind. He seems to be fairly aware of his own failings and flaws, at least as much as any person can. He acknowledges them in the course of the story. One might think this wouldn’t be interesting. The truth is, it’s riveting. Whether Hart is talking about the drug issues he had, his child, his art work or any of his various musical projects, it’s fascinating stuff. I would imagine that if you were a big fan of his music, this would be even more rewarding. As it is, I’d recommend it.
