The Winery Dogs

Dog Years - Live In Santiago & Beyond 2013-2016 BluRay

Review by Gary Hill

This is quite a cool set. First we've got a live video of The Winery Dogs. A bonus CD is included with several songs that have not been released in the US before. Addressing the BluRay, the video and audio quality are both quite good, but I wouldn't consider them great. The performance on the other hand is on fire.

Personally, I haven't considered these guys a prog act before, but the live show really lands it there. This band is a three-piece made up of Richie Kotzen (lead vocals/guitar), Mike Portnoy (drums) and Billy Sheehan (bass). They all have amazing chops and really get to show that off in live performance. My only real complaint in that regard is that Kotzen's voice (while certainly adequate) doesn't have as much power as the instrumentals do. Perhaps someone with a bit more powerful vocal presence would be better as his voice tends to get lost. That's more about the musicianship and strength of this band instrumentally than it about his voice. This is a hard act to try to sing over because they create such an amazing wall of sound that it's hard to do anything but get lost.

The EP is exactly what you'd expect, more great music from this fine band. It's basically a bonus feature, though, as the video is the real selling point.
