The Rolling Stones

A Bigger Bang Live On Copacabana Beach DVD/CD Set

Review by Gary Hill

In 2006 The Rolling Stones played a free concert on Copacabana Beach, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. With an audience estimated at 1.5 million people, it is something like the sixth or seventh largest attendance of any concert. It's definitely the largest concert the Rolling Stones have ever done.

This new DVD set (with a double audio disc of the music) has been remastered and restored. It includes four songs from the show that were previously unreleased. It is a great document from a historical point of view. It's a live Stones show, so, you can also expect a fun concert.

To a large degree, you know what you are going to get with any Rolling Stones live video. They don't do anything halfway. Their staging and production are always among the best out there. You know that they also have top-notch videography and sound recording. Since this is a more modern recording, it's higher quality than a lot of older stuff.

I don't think there is a bad Stones concert. If there is, I've never seen it. They are definitely one of the best bands live. I wasn't even a big Stones fan until I saw them live in 1981. That really made a hardcore fan of the band out of me. As good as their albums are, the band really is best in live performance.

All that said, I've seen better live Stones shows. It seems strange to so that, but it's also not the disclaimer it sounds like. I mean, if you see enough of them, some have to be better than others. It doesn't mean that the show isn't great. It is. There are just some better Stones shows available.

Keep in mind, though, each tour is unique. So, depending on which songs are your favorites or which aspects of the band are your favorites, you might enjoy different shows more than I would. And, because of that unique nature, every live Stones video is worth watching. They all have their own special charms.

This new release meets all expectations I have for a live Rolling Stones video. The band sets that bar high, and this achieves it. What more can you ask for, really?
