Live At The Gong Family Unconventional Gathering DVD

Review by Gary Hill

I have to admit to being a casual Gong fan, so obviously my review will come from that viewpoint. I should also note that, since I've reviewed the CD version of this, and therefore all of the songs, in this same issue, this review will focus on the video itself and those aspects. For more on the actual music, please see that CD review.

Looking at the video quality I would say that there are no complaints. It's not so great that you notice the quality, but it's definitely more than adequate. The stage itself seems a bit small for all the musicians who occupy it, but with such a big band, I think that was unavoidable.

The concert is entertaining from start to finish. I really love some of the visual effects that are used, but they can get a little over the top at times. I actually think the sound quality on this DVD might be better than that on the CD release. I should also mention that performance is very theatrical with costumes and other elements adding to both the cool and weird factors. All in all, I found this to be very entertaining.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2022  Volume 1. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2022.
