The Void’s Last Stand

Interviewed by Gary Hill
Interview with Jonas Wingens of The Void's Last Stand From 2012
MSJ: It’s been several years since we last interviewed you. Can you catch the readers up on what’s been going on in the world of The Void’s Last Stand?
Well, we’ve been on the road supporting our first album. Did some shows in Germany with Damo Suzuki, Gurumaniax and Blurt among others. After that we soon began to write and record our second album. And that’s it pretty much.
MSJ: In what way is the new album similar to your previous work? In what way is it different?
People say there’s a big difference between our first and our second album. But to me it’s really all the same. It’s just one big never ending story...one evolution. And besides I wrote a lot of the stuff of our second album way before I wrote the songs for our first album. So for me there is no real cut or something. Quite contrary! It’s a real commingling of old and new... taking up old ideas, mixing them with new stuff, developing them further. So in that way both albums should actually not be considered as similar, but as one, even if there is a difference in regard to what you actually hear.
MSJ: What's ahead for you?
We would love to hit the road again and play live. But due to our personal living conditions that’s not really possible at the moment. Thus we are working on our third album The Arthur Rimbaud Bible: A promise to be good! instead of doing nothing. We really hope that after recording our third album playing live will be an option again!
MSJ: What was the last CD you bought and/or what have you been listening to lately?
Well, lately I spent a fortune on Lou Reed and Iggy Pop vinyls. I have them all on CD already. But I’d like to have them all on vinyl. But I’m not really listening to that right now. I’m just buying. Lately I listened a lot to Syd Barrett and Robert Calvert. I love them both! Geniuses!
MSJ: Have you read any good books lately?
I got an English version of the Bible for Christmas from my girl. I’m running over the pages of this now and then.
MSJ: What about the last concert you attended for your enjoyment?
Last one was Noel Gallagher in Cologne.
MSJ: If you could sit down to dinner with any three people, living or dead, for food and conversation, with whom would you be dining?
Concerning the living ones: Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Cedric Bixler Zavala from The Mars Volta. Concerning the dead: Jim Morrison, Syd Barrett, John Lennon.
MSJ: What would be on the menu?
Actually I’m a real carnivore, but my girl-friend has turned me on to vegetarian food lately. And I have to confess most of it is real good! So I guess that would be on the menu.. Something vegetarian with a bottle of beer.
MSJ: Are there any closing thoughts you would like to get out there?
Yes. I am really nervous and looking forward to tomorrow's semi final of Borussia Mönchengladbach versus Bayern München. I hope we beat them for the third time this season!
