Karmacoda

Interviewed by Gary Hill
Interview with Heather Pierce and Brett “B.” Crockett of Karmacoda From 2008
MSJ: This interview is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2008  Volume 3 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Where are you from and how does living there affect your songwriting?
Heather Pierce:  Originally from Southern California.  I have lived in SF for over 10 years.  I love the eclecticism of the Bay Area.  Artists here are true to what moves them and find ways to make a life out of what they love.
Brett “B.” Crockett.:  I am originally from near Chicago, but moved here right out of school.  I’m really a Californian by nature, I feel at home here.  The Bay Area has a diverse cultural and artistic community and a beautiful landscape.  These all play a major role in the music Karmacoda creates.
MSJ:
Who is in your ultimate super group?
Heather Pierce:  Tori Amos- piano/vocals, Allison Goldfrapp- vocals, ?uestlove of The Roots- drums/percussion, Rob Garza and Eric Hilton of Thievery Corporation DJs/programmers, Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead on guitar and Charles Mingus on bass.
MSJ: What's the greatest thing that's ever been said about your music?
Brett “B.” Crockett.:  Someone sent us an email and wrote, “I listen to your music every day and I couldn’t live without it.”  That’s about as good as it gets.
MSJ: What are your main musical influences?
Heather Pierce:  Goldfrapp, Tori Amos, Radiohead, Sia, The Postal Service, jazz...Chet Baker, Blossom Dearie
Brett “B.” Crockett.:  Beatles, Miles Davis, Peter Gabriel, Radiohead
MSJ: What's your favorite iPod track this week?
Heather Pierce:  "Road to Somewhere"- Goldfrapp
MSJ: What's the last album you bought that you're enjoying?
Heather Pierce:  Goldfrapp- Seventh Tree
MSJ: Have you seen any great live shows lately?
Heather Pierce:  Hot Chip and Goldfrapp
MSJ: What was the first album you ever bought?
Brett “B.” Crockett.:  Abbey Road by the Beatles, I think.
MSJ: What was the first concert you ever attended?
Heather Pierce:  B-52's and Violent Femmes
MSJ: What's your favorite artist and album?
Brett “B.” Crockett.:  If I could have only one album on a desert island it would be Kind of Blue by Miles Davis.   I listen to it a couple of times a week.
MSJ:
If you could craft an all-star band, who would play in it?
Brett “B.” Crockett.:  The Beatles.
MSJ: What is your favorite movie?
Miles Davis:  Vertigo- Alfred Hitchcock

Brett “B.” Crockett.:  Rear Window by Hitchcock.  I didn’t know that was Heather’s favorite movie until now.  Hmmm, this gives me some further insight into our relationship
MSJ: Have you ever illegally downloaded music?
Brett “B.” Crockett.:  Yes….  No!.....  Maybe!   Next question!
MSJ: Do you read any online music magazines, if so, which ones?

Brett “B.” Crockett:  Music Street Journal of course.  Was that a trick question?

MSJ:
The major labels have said that downloading of music is at the heart of the problems they are having with lower sales - do you think downloading is a help or a hindrance?
Brett “B.” Crockett.:  It’s a double edged sword.  It’’s amazing exposure for bands, we wouldn’t be here without the internet, but people can get your music without paying for it.  This can make paying rent a challenge.
MSJ: How do you feel about fans recording and trading shows?
Brett “B.” Crockett.:  As long as the artist gives their permission, I think it’s fantastic.
MSJ:
What has been your biggest Spinal Tap moment?
Brett “B.” Crockett:  We were playing a concert during a summer heat wave and half of the power on stage went out in the middle of a song.  Only the bass and vocals were coming out of the PA.  We kept on singing the song with a solo bass accompaniment.  The audience loved it, because we shrugged it off.
