Steve Thorne

Interviewed by Gary Hill
Interview with Steve Thorne from 2009
MSJ: It’s been a few years since we did an interview. What’s been new in your world?
Well, the new album Into The Ether and having some new players involved in my songs. I'm very pleased to have John Beck from It Bites playing some wonderful keyboards for me, for the first time, and also John Giblin on Fretless bass. He's played bass for Kate Bush, Brand X and also Peter Gabriel.

I've also signed to a new record company, F2 music.
MSJ: If you weren't involved in music, what do you think you'd be doing?
That's a difficult one - something artistic hopefully.
MSJ: If you were a superhero, what music person would be your arch-nemesis and why?
That would probably be Simon Cowell of X Factor fame.

He'd make me play trashy pop songs, exploit me, then dump me on the rubbish heap when the hits dried up.
MSJ: If you were to put together your ultimate band, who would be in it?
That's easy. Tony Levin, bass, Gavin Harrison or Nick D'Virgilio on drums, Tony Banks on keyboards, Andy Latimer on guitar.
MSJ: If you were in charge of assembling a music festival and wanted it to be the ultimate one from your point of view, who would be playing?
First band of the day would be It Bites, followed by Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd(with Roger Waters in it) ending the evening with Gabriel’s Genesis, playing The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway in its entirety.
MSJ: What was the last CD you bought, or what have you been listening to lately?
The last CD I bought was Fear Of A Blank Planet by PT. I listen to a very wide range of music, ranging from classical to Reggae.

XTC are one band I’ve been listening to a lot lately All their albums are great.
MSJ: What about the last concert you attended for your enjoyment?
The last concert i went to was English band Doves, down in Portsmouth - very  good live gig. I also went to see Keane recently.
MSJ: Finally, are there any closing thoughts you’d like to get out there?
Just thanks for the interview and to anyone reading this, please buy my album Into The Ether and don't illegally download it please.

The artwork is exceptional and it contains some really good songs and breathtaking guest performances by some of the world’s best musicians.
MSJ: This interview is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2009  Volume 6 at
