These Curious Thoughts

Interviewed by Gary Hill
Interview with These Curious Thoughts from 2013
MSJ:

It’s been a year or so since we last chatted. What’s new with you guys?

Sean Dunlop: Lots has happened over the past year. We released our fourth studio album, Building Mountains from the Ground in early 2012. Around June we decided to write and record our next album via facebook. Jim would post lyrics and I would then write, record, and create a video. Our fans were able to comment and participate in the process. We recently completed that album and it is in the stages of being mixed for an early 2013 release. We are not sure what our next step is, but it most likely will be an album of some sorts.

Jamie Radford: We also released a 4 track E.P to bridge the gap between albums, that was fun and something we have never done before. There are some cool songs on there but the album- possibly called What Is It and How Did It Get There? will be even better- includes one of my favorite tracks - "Brain In A Jar."

MSJ:

How do you think These Curious Thoughts has evolved and grown?

Sean Dunlop: The band has changed dramatically over time. From Jim and I writing to each other shooting film footage on different continents and merging them together for a song. (Check out “Over A Desk” on our YouTube account). I think that the music and sound has matured and become even better. Now we are playing more live shows, and people are really enjoying the original sound.

Jamie Radford: Well I have sprouted gills and grown about half and inch...

MSJ:

What do you think you’ve retained from release to release?

Sean Dunlop: We have continually learned how to move forward with our sound. Each release we take another stab at something different. I think that each album has its own unique sound and is a collection of that period of time.

Jamie Radford: We don't tend to write the same song twice. There might be musical and lyrical themes that crop up time to time but generally, like Sean says, we try new stuff....

MSJ: What's ahead for you?

Sean Dunlop: An open road with plenty of stops and pleasant travelers. We will continue to work together and come up with new and original music while living our busy lives in different countries.

Jamie Radford: 2013 is a really busy new year for us both but we always make time for the music...

MSJ: What was the last CD you bought and/or what have you been listening to lately?

Sean Dunlop: Bought three in one day all in rotation in the car – The Best of Radiohead, Bob Marley’s Legends, and The Best of Neil Young.

Jamie Radford: Well the last three I bought were Tall Ships - Everything Touching, Menomena - Moms and Frightened Rabbit - State Hospital.

MSJ:

Have you read any good books lately?

Sean Dunlop: Working on some Buddhist books and getting excited to read Neil Young’s Waging Heavy Peace.

Jamie Radford: Stewart Lee - How I Escaped My Certain Fate:The Life And Many Deaths Of A Stand-Up Comedian…it's an awesome book about a great stand up comedian "see how jokes work, their inner mechanisms revealed, before your astonished face!"

MSJ:

What about the last concert you attended for your enjoyment?

Sean Dunlop: Radiohead

Jamie Radford: Menomena in Shoreditch, London (a place so cool that fashion changes every 45 seconds…bastards!)

MSJ:

What has been your biggest Spinal Tap moment?

Sean Dunlop: When we played a puppet show and the drummer’s head blew up.

Jamie Radford: Sean was possessed by the spirit of jazz and his hat caught on fire!

MSJ:

Are there any closing thoughts you would like to get out there?

Sean Dunlop: Give our music a listen and drop us a line on our Facebook page.

Jamie Radford: Check out our music and drop us know if you love it...or hate it..any feedback is respected..until we find out your address then we burn your house..no only kidding, come check us out and keep reading Music Street Journal!

MSJ: This interview is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2013  Volume 1 at lulu.com/strangesound.
