Derek Sherinian

Interviewed by Gary Hill
Interview with Derek Sherinian from 2013
MSJ:

Derek, it’s been a while since we’ve chatted with you. What’s been new in the world of Derek Sherinian?

I just finished a three month world tour with Joe Bonamassa. I am having a blast playing with him and the band, what great players.

MSJ:

A number of your solo albums are in the process of being reissued. How did that come about?

I met Rob Gill at Eagle Rock Entertainment while doing the Zakk Wylde Unblackened live DVD. He asked me about reissuing my solo records, and I thought it was a great idea.

MSJ: If you were talking to a long time fan (one who has the original releases of these) what would you say makes the new ones different?

The only differences are that the new releases have new liner notes by Joe Lalaina from Guitar World, and new commentary from myself, and many of the key guest players. There are some new photos, as well.

MSJ:

You seem to always be involved in several projects. What’s brand new or up and coming for you?

I'm co-promoting the Progressive Nation at Sea 2014 cruise with Mike Portnoy. This is going to be a great experience for Prog fans around the world. (For more info go to progressivenationatsea.com)

MSJ:

If you were in charge of assembling a music festival and wanted it to be the ultimate one from your point of view who would be playing?

Unless I could go back in time and extract bands while they were in their prime, I would not be interested. But if I could, I would have Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Queen, Ozzy with Randy Rhodes, and Deep Purple.

MSJ: Do you have a musical “guilty pleasure”?

I love Dr. Dre And Snoop Dogg circa '92. I love gangsta rap because I can listen to it and enjoy without analyzing it to death.

MSJ:

Are there any closing thoughts you would like to get out there?

It has been a great year of touring with Billy Idol and Joe Bonamassa. I look forward to 2014!
