Gary Duncan Quicksilver

Live At Fieldstone (vinyl)

Review by Gary Hill

This new vinyl reissue is classy stuff. It's heavy-duty 180 gram vinyl. The music here is a live performance from Quicksilver Messenger Service's guitarist Gary Duncan's band Quicksilver. The music here most often leans toward the jazz end of the spectrum, but you get the jam band kind of thing you'd expect. Since the music is heavy on that jam band element, it's not the most conducive to track by track reviews, but you'll get the general idea. It's a satisfying listening experience.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) in Music Street Journal: 2020  Volume 1. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2020.

Track by Track Review
Side One

Voodoo Boogie #1

A killer blues rocking groove brings this into being, feeling a bit like ZZ Top. This instrumental is a real powerhouse jam with some killer instrumental work from all involved.

Bubba Jeans
There is a bit of a jazz groove to this smoking hot number. This tune has some vocals. It also has plenty of killer jamming built into it.
Side Two

Close Enuff For Jazz

There is a lot of jazz and boogie built into this killer tune. While there are some vocal sections, the instrumental movements are the purely extended stuff.

Maiden Voyage
Here they take on the title track from a Herbie Hancock album. The fusion on this works so well. They put into an extensive performance and really jam so well on the piece. There is some killer guitar work on this thing, but really every one puts in stellar performances on this instrumental piece. I really dig the cool journey into psychedelia later in the tune. That gives way to a tasty guitar solo.
