Perfect Imperfection (digital single)

Review by Gary Hill

This new single comes from an artist who has found a way to turn adversity into a strength. She has overcome a number of things in her own life and come out on the other side with a positive outlook. While I personally feel there might be an almost exploitative element to going into the details, the fact that she has processed these things into a positive message is the important takeaway. Besides that fact, the music stands on its own even without knowing the story. I have landed this under the "progressive rock" banner more because it qualifies as "art music" than any real connection to prog rock. That said, some comparison to people like Kate Bush are appropriate.

Perfect Imperfection
This number begins on piano. As the vocals join they have so much power behind them. The song builds outward with a real modern pop music meets classic art rock vibe. This has as much in common with Kate Bush as it does with the music of more contemporary songstresses. It really treads a line between those two edges and schools of thought. There are some decidedly symphonic vibes coming from the musical arrangement, but as another dichotomy it's delivered with an electronic foundation.
