Down By Law

Lonely Town

Review by Gary Hill

This is a band that first got started in the 1980s. I remember hearing the name, but I never heard them before this album other than one song on a compilation disc.. I know they are considered a punk rock band, but personally, I think most of their stuff lands more along the lines of alternative rock. This is a strong release whatever kind of music you think it is, though.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2022  Volume 1. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2022.

Track by Track Review
Denim and Leather
A killer screaming hot hard rocker, the punk edges on this are classic.
Anthem
The guitar solo on this reaches toward heavy metal zones. This is a frantic and furious hard rocker that's so cool.
Lonely Town
Catchy, meaty and so strong, this is a real rocker with plenty of elements in the mix. For some reason I'm reminded of Blue Oyster Cult to some degree here. There is some definite reggae in the rhythm guitar part of this.
Gleam
More of a punk edge is present here, but the cut has plenty of pop hooks and a lot of great style, too.
Steal the Night
I love the driving energy of this tune. It has a lot "oomph" and really screams.
So Solo
Jabby rhythm guitar is on the menu here as part of the arrangement. This has a lot of energy and punk edges. Yet, it's also got plenty of more mainstream pop rock things.
Darkest Sun
This is screaming hot. It's punky, metallic and so fast and furious. This is just on fire. It's one of the highlights of the disc.
Go Back Home
While this has some punk angles to it, overall this is just a strong alternative rocker. It's a catchy tune.
Black Sheep
Now, this screaming hot cut is all punk and all solid. This earns a parental advisory.
Heroes and Zeroes
I dig this hard rocking tune. It's catchy and also meaty. It's also more alternative rock based.
Soar
This song is another that's more of an alternative rocker. It has plenty of cool melodic music, but with a crunchy edge.
This Heart Remains
More energized and rocking, this has a lot of cool elements at play.
My Reservation's Been Confirmed
There is more of an old-school rock and roll sound at the heart of this song It's another powerhouse.
