BlissBliss

Horizons

Review by Gary Hill

The name for this musical outfit comes from the names of its two main musical forces vocalist Renee Bliss and percussionist Lang Bliss. The two of them, who are a married couple, have married some intriguing musical concepts here. This combines jazz, rock, pop, soul, funk and even prog music in different combinations throughout. It’s a very successful mix of sounds, and this album is so classy and effective.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2025  Volume 4. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2025.
Track by Track Review
Your Numbers Up

There is a great fast paced groove to this. The cut has some hints of jazz, but it’s really quite prog rock in a lot of ways. The vocals brings more mainstream jazz vibes. There are some smoking hot jazz shifts and grooves here. The guitar solo on this track is so meaty. This has such a great blend of jazz and rock music.

Do or Die

More mainstream contemporary rock in nature, this has some soul grooves in the mix. It has some minor hints of prog rock, too. It’s another powerhouse tune. The instrumental section on this is great.

Searching For

A jazz groove is on the menu here. This is another strong tune. It also lends a different flavor.

Drive

Funky and vaguely proggy, this is a powerhouse number. It’s one of my favorites here. It just oozes cool.

Talking Through Fences

There are definitely some funky things at play here. The vocal arrangement is great, but so is everything else about this piece. It’s infectious and energetic. It’s also so entertaining.

What's Going On

This classic gets a great soulful rendition. I really like this a lot.

Crimson Love

More of a balladic number, this works well. It has plenty of jazz and even some prog stylings built into it.
