 Black Sabbath
 Never Say Die (vinyl)
 Review by Gary Hill

I decided that we should honor the memory of Ozzy Osbourne in some way. I got looking around at the Black Sabbath site to see which Sabbath albums are available in some special edition. I found that most of them have been reissued in vinyl form, but only one is still available – Never Say Die. So, I figured that was an appropriate item for this issue of Music Street Journal. Since I’ve previously reviewed the CD version, and since the music is all the same, I’m including that review (with the side notations added) here for the sake of consistency. Without further delay, here that is.
Black Sabbath were arguably the creators of the heavy metal genre, but were never really happy to rest on their laurels for that accomplishment. They generally have pushed the envelope in many ways touching on musical styles which most metal bands consider out of their realm. This album, actually greatly overlooked, is a fine example of that phenomenon. Influences on this one include progressive/art rock and jazz.
This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2025 Volume 4. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2025.
