Alex Harvey and his Soul Band - You Are My Sunshine
This has a real garage band vibe at play. It’s a fun romp. It rocks pretty well. |
The Downliners Sect - Above And Beyond
Here we get a countrified tune. It’s bouncy and playful, but it’s full country music in much of its delivery. |
The Searchers - Hey Joe
Driving old-school rock and roll, this one lands more in that garage band territory. The vocals still have some hints of country music. Overall, this tune is my favorite of the first three. It’s a live recording. |
King Size Taylor and The Dominoes - Ruby Ann
Some rather honky tonk piano starts this thing. The cut works out from there to a cool romp. It’s has both rock and roll and country elements at play. |
Lee Curtis and The All Stars - Mohair Sam
There are some solid hooks and great rock and roll textures built into this number. This tune makes me think of early Beatles. The horn is a nice touch. |
Jerry Williams and The Violents - Draling Nellie Grey
This has a rockabilly vibe. I think that there are some attempts made to lean toward Elvis Presley sounds. The guitar solo is classy, and I like the energy of the tune.
The Poor Things - Danny Boy
Here we get a soulful vintage rock and roll ballad. It’s a classy tune and a good change of pace.
Sonny Webb and The Orioles - Who Shot Sam
More vintage rock and roll, this has a good riff and is a lot of fun. |
Billy J. Kramer and The Dakotas - Tennessee Waltz
This has some great late 50s, early 60s rock and roll sound built into it. It’s one of my favorite tunes here and includes some killer guitar soloing. |
Spencer Davis Group - Georgia On My Mind
I really love this one. It’s a killer rock and roller with plenty of blues and soul in the mix. |
Jimmy and The Rackets - Stick With Me Baby
Contemporary pop and rock and roll are on the menu here. This is not up to the same level as some of the rest, but it’s entertaining.
The Merseybeats - Fools Like Me
Slow moving rockabilly is the vibe here. This is another that’s neither a standout, nor all that bad. |
The Nashville Teens - Tobacco Road
I’ve always been a fan of this tune. This nearly psychedelic, garage rocking version really works well. This is another highlight of the set. |
Johnny Sandon - Sixteen Tons
Another classic tune, this rather bluesy rockabilly take on it is classy. |
Mike Sheridan and The Nightriders - Lonely Weekends
Bouncy rock and roll is the idea here. This is another that makes me think of early Beatles to a large degree. In fact, this one might actually feel more Beatles-like than anything else here. |
The Hollies - Candy Man
Here we continue with more Beatles-like stuff. The harmonica is a nice touch, and this rocks out like crazy. I really love the bass work on it, too. |
Mike Warner and The New Stars - I Wonder If I Care As Much
This mellow tune is balladic. It’s slow moving and classy. |
Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs - Devoted To You
We’re back into Beatles-like territory on this fun romp. It’s another standout tune. The guitar solo is on fire. |
The Downliners Sect - Midnight Special
This has a real downhome rockabilly vibe to it. It’s definitely not my favorite version of this tune, but it’s catchy, |
Tommy Quickly and The Remo Four - The Wild Side Of Life
While this has some definite garage rock in the mix, it lands closer to contemporary pop via the style of the vocal performance. |
Didi and his ABC Boys - Greenback Dollar
This is a classy rock and roller with some garage band sound in the mix. It’s another standout. |
The Incrowd - I'll Make It All Up To You
This bluesy tune features a lot of keyboard work. The vocals are very soulful. |
The Searchers - Sea Of Heartbreak
There is a real 1960s rock and roll vibe to this. The piano work is classy and prominent. |
Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs - Half As Much
More Beatles-like rock and roll is on the menu here. This is bouncy and fun. |
Tony Sheridan and The Beat Brothers - Jambalaya
The horn and guitar on this vintage sounding rock and roller are both standouts. The cut has a great energy and groove, but don’t expect a Cajun sounding tune because that aspect of the number is pretty much absent. |
Tony and The Initials - Knee Deep In The Blues
Rockabilly merges with contemporary pop on this romp. I’m not all that impressed with the whistling section of the tune. |
The Lords - Tobacco Road (German)
Here we get a very different take on this classic tune. I dig the almost psychedelic rock vibe of the number. The German lyrics definitely make it feel unique. |
The Downliners Sect - Wreck Of The Old '97
Featuring some frantic piano, this is a party-time sort of number that has a lot of rock and roll and rockabilly in the mix. It makes me think of something The Band might have done. |
Mike Warner and The New Stars - I Walk The Line
This is a very different take on the Johnny Cash tune, while also paying tribute, it’s a little more rock and roll, but not much. |
The Bobby Patrick Big Six - Your Cheatin' Heart A real powerhouse, this has a lot of jazz built into it. It’s still got a healthy helping of rock and roll on the menu, too. |
