The Perc

Chapters & Suites – Electric Kindergarten Vol. 10

Review by Gary Hill

I have previously reviewed The Perc Meets the Hidden Gentleman quite a few times. Well, that outfit is a duo consisting of Tom "The Perc" Redecker und Emilio "The Hidden Gentleman” Winschetti. So, this disc was released by one half of that duo. It’s made up of tracks previously released on albums under different artist names. I previously reviewed one of those tracks, and have included that review as part of the track review here for the sake of consistency.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2026  Volume 1. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2026.

Track by Track Review
The Moonblood Suite

This was originally released on the Taras Bulba album Sketches of Babel. Symphonic styled keyboard textures get this under way. The track is decidedly classical early, but with an electronic music format. It eventually works out into some classy almost dance oriented electronic music. This works through some changes and has both space rock and psychedelia in the mix amidst a definite electronic format. The female vocals are in German (I think) while the male ones are in English.

Sun Sketches

This is more rocking. It has a lot of psychedelia, some definite prog, electronics and more. It’s a classy tune that has some space rock elements at play. This track was originally released on the Worldlooker album under The Perk.

Betancuria

This features a vocal duet. It also features some serious guitar oriented progressive rock. Mid-track it drops to an electronic percussive section for the backdrop of a spoken piece that sounds like some kind of interview. From there trippy space meets psychedelia takes over after that voice is gone. The instrumental section runs for quite a while and works through a lot of great changes. We get some smoking hot electric guitar driven music at play as the vocals return. At nearly 12-and-a-half minutes long, this is the second longest thing here (falling a few seconds behind the album’s opener). It’s also quite probably my favorite track here. It’s so strong. This one comes from the Electric Family album Tender Blue Rose.

The Dreamboat

This was originally released on the Electric Family album Terra Circus. The space rock that gets this going definitely calls to mind Hawkwind for me. This is driving hard-edged stuff that is very cool. It’s another standout track, and those Hawkwind elements are really all over this thing. I reviewed this one on its original album, and this is what I said about it, “More psychedelically tinged music is at the heart of this thing. As it grows outward from there it shifts to a cool driving grind. There is more Hawkwind-like space jamming that emerges further down the road. In fact, the whole extended instrumental section sounds a lot like Hawkwind.”

Rock The Widow

The closing track comes from an album by The Perc Meets the Hidden Gentleman album (Two Foozles at the Tea Party) Bouncy, driving and quirky, this is a solid tune with a lot of psychedelic alternative rock in the mix. It’s not a standout, but it is good. The dropped back trippiness mid-track with spoken vocal is a cool touch. It gets pretty dramatic and theatrical at times as it continues. It gradually rises up toward the earlier arrangement as the sung vocals return.
