Non-Prog CD Reviews

Jeff Aug

Interim

Review by Gary Hill

I previously reviewed another set from Jeff Aug. Like that one, this is an instrumental release based mostly on acoustic guitar. I landed that one under prog, but said it was not a great fit. I think this might also be able to go there, but I’d say it’s less prog than that one. So, for that reason I put this under non-prog. The thing is, no matter how you classify this, if you dig acoustic guitar and instrumental music in general, you are the target audience. This has some really shining moments, but nothing here falls short, either.

Track by Track Review
New Day´s Dawn

This has a real soft rock meets prog vibe. I’m particularly reminded of some of the acoustic stuff from early Rush.

Timeline

The intricate guitar work on this is even more powerful than the opener This has more of a classical vibe to it.

Katzenjammer

Short and to the point, this acoustic guitar jam is another classy one.

Interim (The Day the Elephant Died)

At a little over four minutes long, this is the epic of the set. It makes good use of both acoustic and electric guitars. I would call this number progressive rock. It has a lot of drama and a real sense of mystery. It’s so strong.

Emerald

Classical music meets shredding on this acoustic guitar solo.

Ernesto

This is a classy acoustic guitar jam that has some rock sensibilities and a lot of intricacy.

Interim III (Point of No Return)

One that feels more song like, this also rocks a bit more.

Open Fields

I really dig the groove and vibe of this track. It’s not a big change, but it really grabs me.

Serenade

There is so much charm and beauty build into this track. The addition of violin is great. This is one of my favorite pieces here.

Suspended Joy

I dig the flow and vibe of this acoustic guitar number a lot.

Interim II

While not any kind of big change, this is a unique track. It gets some electric guitar added to the mix later, bringing a rocking angle. That comes with an intensification of the acoustic jamming at the same time.

Aaron´s Song

This is another classy acoustic guitar piece. It does a great job of bringing it all down to Earth in style.
