Lynne Hanson

Just a Poet

Review by Gary Hill

This is the third album from Lynne Hanson that I’ve reviewed. I’m not sure if this is the strongest of the three overall, but I think the opening track might be my favorite song from her. The mix of blues, rock, folk, pop and roots music is unchanged from the previous discs. This is just another strong collection of songs demonstrating that flavor and her talent.

Track by Track Review
Outlaw Lover

I really love the cool Americana vibe built into this thing. It’s an understated arrangement, and the vocals really bring it to bear in style. This is more bluesy than country based, but it definitely has some country groove to it, too. This tune is pure magic.

Just A Little Bit

Now, this focuses more on the country end of the spectrum. The opener was more electric based, this one has more acoustic guitar in the mix. It’s more of a country meets folk styled piece. The vocal arrangement is the main driving factor on this, but the whole tune has plenty of charms.

Princess And Her Pea

This is another track with a lot of folk music in the mix. It’s classy stuff. That has more of a pop rock vibe and plenty of retro leanings.

Just A Poet

Mellow guitar and vocals makes up the arrangement for the first section of this. It gets a little more instrumentation, ramping up the intensity slightly, but overall this is a ballad.

Can't Let Go

Bouncy and pop rock oriented, this track is fun.

Spray Paint

Another rocking song, this has a lot of singer-songwriter elements at play. It’s classy stuff, but not a big change.

Sort Of

While in a lot of ways this isn’t a big change, it does have some soulful, almost jazzy angles.

About Yesterday

I dig the singer songwriter meets pop rock sound on this a lot, but it’s another that’s not a big stretch from the rest here.

Weeds

This is a classy tune. It has more of a bluesy feeling to it that serves it well.

Light In Me

I like this song a lot. It has more of that bluesy rock groove to it. It’s not a huge change, though.

Rubik's Cube

A slow and rather bluesy tune, this is one of the highlights of the set for me. It just works so well.

Halfway Whole

More stripped back, this has a lot of roots music in the mix, but it’s more singer-songwriter based. It’s a cool track, but I think the previous number would have made a stronger closer.
