Progressive Rock Concert Reviews

Earth To Ashes

Live in Portland, Oregon, February 20th, 2013

Review by Larry Toering

This is one hot progressive rock band with a power metal edge that is much more apparent on disc than in concert, as they stretch the prog boundaries in their performances. They continue to open for national acts and put on their own shows throughout the area, with a great crowd following. They also have a lot going for them in both the twin lead guitar and vocal departments. The guitar half of that equation is managed with Matt Dorodo and Larry Massengale Jr. splitting equal but completely different styles. In terms of vocals, charismatic front man and bass player Angelo Jenson’s presence cannot be disputed as a leading attraction.

Together they have been in transition concerning drummers, so this was a different gig for them in that respect. Most of the show resembled the last time I had seen them, but I could tell the difference and hope they settle on a fine replacement. I did like what I heard but this can be a difficult transition, so I wish them all the best in their quest to seal their line-up. Nevertheless, it was a fantastic show, and the crowd ate up every minute of it, as usual. I would have to say they're easily one of the best rocking bands around the area.

If you like your rock hard and proggy, this band is the ticket, as there aren't enough of either progressive rock or power metal bands in the area that have everything going for them. These guys are sharp at everything they do. They have plenty of attitude, as well as plenty of both seriousness and playfulness to go with it. On this night I didn't catch every bit of them, but what I didn't see I could clearly hear, and they brought their best.
