Kat Perkins

Fearless

Review by Gary Hill

This EP is quite strong. I’d have to say that it probably would appeal to fans of Heart quite a bit. For one thing, there is a cover of that outfit’s song “Barracuda.” Even beyond that, though, this tends to remind me quite a bit of Heart.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2015  Volume 4 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review
Fearless

Piano leads off the set. The vocals come in over the top of that in fine style. The piece eventually works out to a pop rock song that feels both modern and classic. The vocals are really the selling point here, as the song is fairly standard fare. Those vocals make this thing really soar.

Paris (Ooh La La)
Wow, this thing really rocks. The vocals are soulful and powerful. It feels a lot like something Heart would do to me. Mind you, I mean the more pure rocking side of Heart. There are some hints of country here, too. The guitar solo screams.
Barracuda
Speaking of Heart, this is a cover of their classic song. It’s a competent version. Given Perkins’ voice it’s an obvious choice, too. The thing is, I’ve always said that if you are going to cover a song, you should make it your own or there is no point in doing it. This is pretty much a “by the numbers” rendition.
Good Girl
This is a killer riff rocker. There is a mellower section mid-track, but overall this is pure hard rocking tune. There is some country in the mix, though. Again, it’s the vocal performance that steals the show and makes this the gem that it is.
Fearless (Acoustic)
This one doesn’t get the rock infusion that the first version of it did. It remains with just piano and symphonic strings. I really think it’s  more powerful in this format. I like this song a lot. It makes a good bookend, too.
