Ridiculous (digital single)

Review by Gary Hill

I can see people arguing with this landing under progressive rock. Sure, parts of it are more modern pop music. There is enough prog here, though, and the arrangement and structure are complex enough, that I can’t see this fitting better anywhere else.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2016  Volume 1 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review
Ridiculous

This comes in with an almost ominous prog rock element. The cut works out from there to a jam with a real bouncy pop rock vibe. It has some definite reggae in the mix, too. What really sells this, though, are the stellar female vocals. They are artsy. They are also both modern and classic in sound and tone. There is a full on prog rock jam mid-track, though, that gives the vocals a run for their money. They take into jazzy territory from there as it moves to the song proper. As it works forward more of the elements before emerge, but they are also blended with definite modern prog sounds. This is almost like No Doubt turned proggy in some ways.

(Editor's Note - Music Street Journal is set up for the allocation of albums, not singles - particularly not one-song singles. So, in the instances, like this one, where we've covered single song releases, we've had to make some adaptations for formatting. In the case of this one, just imagine both track review and overall review reading as one set of copy. )
