Carved Souls

Whispers

Review by Gary Hill

I know these guys get billed as prog in some circles. They are probably better described as dark electronic music. That said, I have landed them under prog rock. This is cool stuff, but never really stretches far. That has a tendency to make it feel a bit monolithic. Still, it's worth the ride.

Track by Track Review
Kill Me

Coming in with some real space rock textures, this turns toward more electronic music based territory. This is dark and quite techno-like. Still, it's very proggy at the same time.

Vile Words
Perhaps even more techno oriented, I really dig the keyboard textures on this cut. It is quite strong. That said, it's less proggy than the opener was. There is a tasty little drop back section that adds some drama.
In a Blink
This definitely makes me think of Kraftwerk. It's cool stuff with a real old school electronic vibe to it.
Whispers
The title track has some really evocative moments. It's still set in the same kind of electronic soundscape. There is just some added character and magic here.
Further
There is kind of a soaring kind of groove to this cool tune. This is one of my favorites here, really.
Satellite
There ia a bouncy kind of rhythmic element here. Otherwise the electronic grooves drive this in the expected way.
Worthless
Although we don't experience any kind of big change here, this is another effective piece of music.
For Me
To me the vocal arrangement on this, along with the driving textures, really make it one of the best cuts here.
Screams
This is suitably dark and rather creepy.
Dark Reflection
I like this one a lot. There are some great dark melodies here.
Interlude
Very pretty and rather classical in nature, this is an exceptionally cool piece of music.
As Far as I Can
The early sections of this are more textural, but it gets into some seriously pounding, rocking territory later in the piece.
