Der Jesuspilz - Live!

Review by Gary Hill

Things like acid folk and kraut rock generally land under progressive rock. This has plenty of both of those elements. It's an intriguing live disc that works quite well. If you demand that lyrics be in English to enjoy music, though, you'll probably want to look elsewhere. Everything here is in German. The sound quality is quite good, but not top-notch. All in all, this is worth having.

Track by Track Review
Schöpfungsgeschichte
As acoustic guitar rises up to bring this into being, there is speaking in German. Obviously something humorous is said because the audience erupts in laughter. As the song continues it has more trippy psychedelic textures merged with space rock. The vocals are all spoken. It remains rather mellow, but definitely reminds me of Hawkwind in a lot of ways. As it approaches the four minute mark they take into some killer folk space territory. The flute that dances across the top adds some real magic. The piece has a definite Hawkind vibe in this movement, too. It gets more purely proggy in some of the instrumental passages further down the road here. It gets rather rocking as it continues to evolve.
Der Satan
Folk music and prog rock stylings along with psychedelia merge on this piece. It makes me think of David Bowie to a large degree. This gets a lot more rocking as it builds outward. The vocals on this one are sung.
Erleuchtung Und Berufung
Intricate folk prog is on the menu here. It's a classy tune that's not a huge departure from what we've heard to this point.
Versammlung
This is a fun little number that's quite percussive. It has some kazoo built into it, too. This is a goofy, but cool, piece.
Bekenntnis
There is almost a church music kind of vibe to this cut. Yet it has an almost Rock in Opposition style of oddity to it. A lot of the vocals are spoken on this number. The kazoo returns on the later parts of this thing.
Vermächtnis Des Meisters
More of a pure folk song, this is cool stuff.
Vision 1
With a bit more of a prog, psychedelic bent, there is plenty of mainstream folk music built into this one, too.
