Better Angels

Review by Gary Hill

I suppose the simplest description here would be folk rock. There is quite a bit of range within that heading, though. Everything here works pretty well, and it flows nicely from start to finish.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2020  Volume 6. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2020.

Track by Track Review
Don’t Be Afraid
Atmospheric textures bring this cut into being. It moves out from there to a folk rock styled cut that has some great tones and moods built into it. It also has a blues edge. There is a real retro feeling to the piece. I love the guitar fills, and the organ lends a retro magic. The tune gets powerful as the arrangement keeps growing and the tune continues.
Vicious Circle
With atmospheric layers over the top, at its heart this is very much a country leaning folk song. It has some hints of proggy textures, leaning toward folk prog.
Braver Space
There are hints of proggy goodness on this number, too. The overall sound on this is of the blues rock variety. It's another tasty tune that also has some hints of jazz built into it.
Better Angels
With both rock and country music delivered in large quantities, this song is a powered up folk rock piece.
Out of the Closet
I dig the cool blues rock meets psychedelic groove on this killer tune. The number has a lot of style and charm, and it really rocks.
Bountiful Sky
A dreamy sort of atmosphere comes in as this song starts. The cut moves forward in more of a mainstream retro rock vibe. There is some killer jazz guitar work on the number.
Fill Me with Your Spirit
A mellower piece, this fits firmly in the folk rock category.
