Lost Leaders

Promises Promises

Review by Gary Hill

This is an intriguing album. While there is nothing really Earth-shattering about the sound of this act, they do what they do pretty well. They also makes things up in fresh ways, allowing them to cover quite a bit of musical territory in a tapestry that is uniquely their own, even if the elements of it might not seem that unique. All in all, this is an entertaining set.

Track by Track Review
Extra-Ordinary
After a keyboard based opening this works out to a driving rocking arrangement. It reminds me a lot of Tom Petty. This energized, catchy and classy.
I Will (Fulfill)
This driving hard rocker is another classy tune. It's not as strong as the opener, though. It's a bit more along the lines of sort of run-of-the-mill singer-songwriter music.
People Like Us
Coming in more like a pop rocker, this is another strong tune. It has some catchy hooks and a great energy to it. It's a lot of fun.
Probably Why We're Here
While not a big change, this is another effective piece.
Falling
I dig the cool piano dominated arrangement on the opening section of this cut. The tune reminds me a bit of both Steely Dan and 10 cc. There are some proggy keyboard bits on the piece later, too. This is a dramatic and potent cut that's among the highlights of the set. It's also one of the most "different," things here, meaning it brings a lot of variety and charm. I really dig the hard rocking guitar solo on the tune, too.
To The Top
Powerful melodic rock grooves are in the driver's seat on this tune. This is a soaring and evocative number that is among the best music here.
Fallen Stars
This is an intriguing and particularly dynamic tune. It comes in with a pretty basic bluesy, funky mellow groove. It grows outward later into a soaring kind of arrangement that is among the best here. This tune is slow moving and so powerful. It's another highlight.
All That I Want
More of a power pop tune, this has some intriguing textures and strong hooks. I can make out more of that Tom Petty thing on this number.
Wake Me Up
This alternative rocker has some spacey keys and a driving arrangement. There are also solid hooks bringing more of a power pop edge to the piece. This is one of the most effective pieces here, and a satisfying closer.
