Peppino D'Agostino

ConneXion

Review by Gary Hill

I reviewed a previous set from Peppino D'Agostino. Like that disc, this is made up of instrumental guitar pieces. I like this one a lot. One track has some electric guitar, but the rest are strictly acoustic. This never feels redundant, and each track has its own unique identity. That's tough enough with any album of instrumentals, but when it's all strictly guitar-based, it's an even more impressive accomplishment.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2021  Volume 3. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2021.

Track by Track Review
High Plains Guitarra
The Latin sounds that permeate the guitar textures of this are so classic and so tasty.
Dancing with Shadows
This intricate piece features some great tones and moods. It also has some exceptional guitar work. Then again, that last part applies to everything here.
Head Case
More of an experimental fusion approach drives this piece. It's pretty crazed and a little challenging, but also so tasty.
Buster
More folk music based, there are some pretty amazing melodies and concepts at play on this piece.
Mars's Sleeping Song
This is a pretty and quite melodic number. It does have a restful, lullaby kind of feeling to it.
Mexican Sunrises
Classical music seems to merge with folk on this number. The piece is gentle and pretty.
Liam's Song
While on the one hand this has more of that delicate folk vibe, this song also has a more rocking section. It's a dynamic piece with some dramatic moments and great contrast.
Stammi Vicino
Now, this is a big change. It includes some electric guitar and really gets into some rather progressive rock zones. Of course, that's after a mellower, and purely acoustic opening section.
Jenny's Goodbyes
There is a driving energy and groove this. It's also got a bit of a sense of mystery and lots of drama in the mix. This is another classy guitar solo.
Beauty in the Abyss
I love the intricate guitar passages on this. The number is another melodic and mellow piece of music.
