Ain't No Storm

Review by Gary Hill

If you dig singer-songwriter styled music that reaches into things like country, folk and alternative rock for its concepts, you will enjoy this album. Everything here is solid and strong. It's all varied enough to keep it from ever feeling repetitive or stale.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2021  Volume 4. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2021.

Track by Track Review
Everything's Changing
Country music seems to merge with alternative rock on this powered up piece. It has some good hooks and plenty of style. The tune gets pretty intense at times.
Come Around
With energetic folk rock in the mix, this reminds me of what you might get if John Mellencamp were to work with Bob Dylan. This still has some country in the mix. It's also got hints of alternative rock by acts like Cracker.
One Less You
The acoustic guitar arrangement that brings this into being seems to have some psychedelia in the mix. The cut works to more of a stripped back, acoustic rock sound as it continues. This is stronger than the two openers and really has so much style and charm.
Frame By Frame
Another that's acoustic based, this has more of a pure alternative rock thing at play. This is a poignant and evocative tune. It's one of the highlights here. It just seems to do everything so well. There are some cool rocking elements with hints of jazz as the arrangement fills out later. This really is one of the highlights of the disc.
Restless Heart
Much more of a rocker, this has a pretty basic singer-songwriter, rocking sound to it. I can make out more of those Bob Dylan elements, too.
Empty Handed Blues
A balladic tune, this is another potent one. It's slow moving, but packed full of style and class.
Room With A View
More of a country rock meets folk music grind, there is a party kind of vibe to this tune. It's bouncy and fun. It's a nice bit of variety and a strong cut. The instrumental break brings some down-home elements. I love the unusual percussion on the track, too.
Other Side Of The Clouds
Another mellow track, this has both folk rock and alternative in the mix. While it's slow moving and on the sedate side, it also has electric instrumentation that brings magic. It gets pretty intense as it builds outward later.
