Lynne Hanson

Just Words

Review by Gary Hill

I love this album from start to finish. There is never a misstep. The music here is somewhat hard to pin down, except to say that it's bluesy and often-roots-inspired, but never limited by those labels or influences. However you categorize this, though, it's strong. Who needs labels, anyway?  Just put it on and enjoy it.

Track by Track Review
True Blue Moon
An energetic pop rock groove is at the core of this song. It's a classy cut that has some hints of a Southern twang to its arrangement.
Hearts Fade
This one has more of a bluesy edge to it. It just oozes cool and style. As strong as the opener was, this ups the ante from there. I love everything about this piece.
Long Way Home
More of a folk rock styled piece, the lyrics to this feel like they have a slice-of-life concept. The vocals have an almost jazzy groove at times. The guitar has some fuzzy edges at point that elevate the rock side of this thing. The track is another highlight.
Just Words
This an edgier, alternative rock based number. It's a powerhouse piece. It brings variety, but it also provides emotion and a real charm. There is a bluesy edge to this, too.  It's one of the highlights, but title tracks should be, right?
Higher Ground
There is a bit of a roots music element to this. The arrangement is a bit less involved than some of the others, in a slightly understated way. There is also a real bluesy edge here. I love the guitar fills on this, but the whole tune is just magical. The blues guitar solo is absolute perfection.
Clean Slate

Here we get a balladic song with a lot of country in the mix. This is an evocative piece that really works well.

Such A Random Thing
A fun and bouncy, folk-based tune, this is a another winner
Lollipops And Roses
A bluesy rocker, this is so strong. It's not a huge change from the other music here, but it just gels so well.
Every Minute In Between
A bit understated, this has a dream pop kind of edge to it. There is a lot of emotion built into the vocal delivery. There is a healthy helping of Americana here.
Hemingway's Songbird
Americana is at the heart of this piece, too. It has some hints of country music and a lot of folk built into it. Yet there is a bit of a jazzy edge here, as well.
Would You Still
A bluesy kind of groove creates this tune. I love the walking bass line and shuffling percussion. The whole tune radiates cool.
