Victoria Bailey

Jesus, Red Wine & Patsy Cline

Review by Gary Hill

In the last decade or two a type of country music that's closer to pop has emerged. Don't expect that here. This is more traditional (and often retro-tinged) country music. Personally, I find that style more real. There is a charm to it, as there is to this whole album. If you like your country to feel like country music, give this a try. It's respectful of the genre and traditions and also quite strong.

Track by Track Review
Honky Tonk Woman
Down-home, slow moving country music with an old school texture is the order of business here.
The Beginning
There is a bit more of a rocking edge built into this, but the song is still decidedly country music.
Ramblin' Man
I dig this country ballad. It's another classy tune.
Spent My Dime on White Wine
I like the organ on this tune. This has an almost gospel music vibe to it. It's a bluesy kind of grind overall, though.
Homegrown Roots
A rocking kind of country jam, this is so much fun.
Tennessee
A slow moving country shuffle is in the driver's seat here. This is a competent cover of a Johnny Cash song.
Outlaws
There is an energetic, swinging kind of groove to the tune. The harmonica and pedal steel are nice touches.
Skid Row
I love the shuffling groove of this killer country song. This is just a lot of fun with a real honky-tonk way. The fiddle playing is particularly classy.
Travelin' Kind
This is a mellower sort of country tune that does a good job of ending the set. It's not quite a ballad, but it's much more laid back than the last track was.
