Foghat

8 Days On The Road

Review by Gary Hill

This set captures a show from November 2019 at Daryl Hall's Daryl's House Club. Foghat is one of those quintessential 70s bluesy rock bands, and you really can't go wrong with their music. They deliver the hits you expect along with a number of lesser known songs, and some interesting cover choices. It all makes for a strong show. This set is one that could go under the video section or audio CD because it has two CDs of audio recording and a DVD of the show. I always have to decide which is the more prominent part, and this time I've opted for the audio CD. The video is professionally shot and quite good, too. I'd call that a win-win.

Track by Track Review
Disc 1

Drivin’ Wheel

Coming in hard-edged, this drives out into an up-tempo blues rocking jam. I particularly dig the guitar soloing on this thing.

Road Fever
Even bluesier than the opener was, this has some killer slide guitar.
Stone Blue
This is more mainstream rocker than the first couple songs were. It has some good hooks and a classic sound. This gets into some killer territory in the extended jam later.
Chateau Lafitte ‘59 Boogie
Here we get another smoking hot bluesy rocker. This gets extensive and really works well.
It Hurts Me Too
Here we get another bluesy rocker. The guitar solo section on this is inspired.
Take Me To The River
The first version of this song I ever heard was from The Talking Heads. It was originally done by Al Green, though. This version is exactly what you'd expect from Foghat. It's another solid tune on a disc full of solid material.
8 Days on the Road
Here we get another smoking hot blues rocker.
Disc 2

Chevrolet

The first verse and chorus on this one is delivered with just drums and vocals. The track gets the other instruments added to the mix from there.

Fool For The City
Here we get a classic Foghat tune. This still holds up really well. I love the bass work on the tune, and the hooks are great. The jam later in this track is purely on fire.
Home In My Hand
I love the slide guitar soloing on this tune. This is another track that's pretty standard Foghat.
I Just Want To Make Love To You
Another Foghat classic, this one starts with acapella vocals. Then the bass leads it in from there and the piece gradually gains more and more drama and style. This was always one of my favorites from Foghat, and this is a killer live rendition.
Maybellene
Here we get a hard-rocking cover of Chuck Berry. This really works well. They really make it a Foghat tune while still preserving the soul of the original.
Play That Funky Music
Wild Cherry's big hit gets a cool redo here. I am a big fan of the funk, so I love the original. This rendition brings an intriguing twist to it, while still feeling largely faithful.
Slow Ride
Foghat's other big hit gets a smoking hot live version. I've always loved this one, too, so this is a winner for me.
