Annicia Banks

Up-Front

Review by Gary Hill

I am a pretty big fan of reggae music. There is just something about it that's infectious and uplifting. So, I was anxious to check out this debut EP from Annicia Banks. Banks hails from Jamaica, so the reggae is legit. I'd say that this release has some particularly strong songs, but there are others that don't work, as well. I think that when she sticks closer to the pure reggae end of the spectrum, it's more effective. That said, everything here is solid.

Track by Track Review
Jamaica Forever
I dig the great reggae groove on this tune. There is some rapping on the number.
It's You
As strong as the opener was, this really ups the ante. The hooks are classy, and the reggae is both classic and fresh.
Love Has Found Its Way
This has more of a soul groove to it. It's not as decidedly reggae based.
Hush
Back into a more standard reggae-vibe, I really love this number. It has great vocals, classy music and just a general good-time feeling to it.
It's Too Late
Another bouncy reggae tune, this is strong. I wouldn't consider it a highlight, but it really is fun.
Free Free Free
The vocal performance on this is purely inspired. The cut has so much magic and power. This is definitely a highlight of the disc.
Restore My Soul
This one has more of a gospel vibe to it. I have to say that it isn't as strong as the more full reggae stuff for me, but your mileage may vary.
