Track by Track Review

Obsidian Whispers
Trippy, echoey stuff rises up. The track works into some decidedly prog-based music. It has a lot psychedelia, folk and space rock built into it. I love the guitar work and the keyboard sounds on this so much. |
 |
Dirty Windows
A mellower cut, this has a lot of style. The mix of sounds is similar here, but there is less psychedelia and more pure prog. This grows well, and has a lot of charm. As potent as the opener was, I think this raises the stakes. |
 |
Success In Failure
There is a darker, balladic vibe to this cut. I’m reminded of Marillion to some degree. It feels a bit like one of the mellower, more introspective pieces from the Fish era of that band. |
 |
Gothic Balladeer
Here we get another ballad-like prog cut. It’s a good track, but we could use a little variety by this point. It’s all starting to blend together a little. |
 |
Older
The formula is definitely wearing thin by this point. We get another prog ballad type tune here. The thing is, there are some inventive vocal parts on this. For that reason it should stand out, but the general format is just too similar to everything else here to shine like it should. |
 |
A Joyful Disturbance
Now, this does bring some change. It’s not a huge departure, but this has some bounce to it. It’s less balladic and more energetic. That really helps the song stand out. |
 |
Vesper Flights
While this definitely has its charms, it’s back into the more balladic zone, and it starts to get lost in the monolithic nature of the set. |
 |
Neighbourhood
A piano led arrangement brings some much needed variety here. As it drifts to more guitar and synthesizer modes, it again starts to feel too samey. |
 |
Beautiful Ugly
Now, this really redeems things. It has more energy, landing more along the lines of melodic rocker. It also has some real magic built into it. It manages to stand taller than a lot of the stuff here. This grows upward in some great prog ways, too. |
