Coincidence

Mets tes lunettes et écoute comme ça sent bon! – Volume 1

Review by Gary Hill
This is a short (less than half an hour) CD. It was obviously done to be released on vinyl because the cover includes “side one” and “side two,” but since I’ve reviewed the CD version, I left that out of the track listing. The music here is instrumental. It is definitely prog, but it has elements of fusion, funk and more. I really like this set a lot. This is the first of three related releases from this artist I’m reviewing for this issue of Music Street Journal.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2025  Volume 2. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2025.
Track by Track Review
Berceuse Chinoise

The bouncy, trippy vibe on this makes me think of both Frank Zappa and King Crimson to some degree. There are some elements that call to mind 1960s pop music, but in a very trippy way. This has some killer jamming and leans toward fusion a lot of the time.

Les Grenouilles

More cool jamming is underway here. There is a Grateful Dead meets fusion sort of feeling to this along with some serious funk.

Soleils

Rather like a building, soaring prog ballad type number, this is cool stuff. It ends in a startlingly abrupt way.

Séquences

As this gets underway it has more of a driving acoustic rock sound on display. It works out to some more mainstream rock elements further down the road. It’s still proggy and intriguing. This really gets into some powerhouse jamming further down the road. Then it suddenly drops to an acoustic guitar solo.

Canevas

Here we get more melodic jamming that leans toward fusion. I really dig the intricate acoustic guitar work.

Sucre d’orge

I like the fusion and funk vibes on this quite a bit. This is another classy tune. It’s got some killer instrumental interplay and a real sense of fun. This is one of the highlights of the disc.
