Jon Gordon

7th Ave. South

Review by Gary Hill

This is the second release from this artist I’ve reviewed. While this is jazz, like the other one, I’m putting it under prog because it generally lands on the more artsy, fusion side of the equation. No matter how you label, this, though, it’s amazing music. It’s all instrumental except for one song with lyrical vocals. That said, several have non-lyrical vocals.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2025  Volume 2. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2025.
Track by Track Review
Witness

A sea of non-lyrical vocals are on display here, creating an otherworldly vibe. The arrangement fills out with piano and percussion added to the mix. Instrumental and vocal elements both lend magic as this number evolves.

7th Ave South

I really love this jazz piece so much. It has quite a traditional vibe and groove, but it’s also quite adventurous. Everyone puts in killer performances, but the piano really drives things in some amazing ways.

Ponder This

A mellower piece, this is melodic and intriguing. It’s perhaps more mainstream jazz. The vocals return on this one and lend more of an experimental vibe. The cut grows out nicely as it continues.

Paradox

I really love the groove and flow of this piece. It’s got a lot of style and charm. It also has some surprises. It really builds out into some powerful and intense jamming as it continues to drive forward. This is the epic of the set, and they make great use of all that time.

Here, There

This has more traditional jazz vocals, complete with lyrics, making it more of a ballad. It does get pretty exciting at times.

Ed's Groove

Fast paced and closer to fusion zones, this is a powerhouse tune. It’s actually one of my favorites here with a good mix of more traditional and challenging jazz.

Visit

The non-lyrical vocals are back again. There is a cool, experimental, adventurous vibe to this track. The track moves through some various moods as it continues. It’s a slow paced, but intriguing piece of music.

Intro

Starting with a horn, this short piece has a real sense of weirdness to it.

Spark

The playful groove that gets this going is all class. The track gradually evolves in some great ways. It shifts out to some energetic and soaring jamming around the minute-and-a-half mark, and the fusion elements really shine. This goes through a number of twists and turns. It’s a real powerhouse.

7th Ave South Reprise

A little over two-minutes long, the first half of this is a horn solo exploration. Non-lyrical vocals and more join after a while. The cut works through, creating a very satisfying conclusion to the album.
