Ranzel X Kendrick

Texas Time Warp

Review by Gary Hill

I have previously reviewed quite a few releases from Ranzel X. Kendrick. His musical style is often all over the place, but it generally works well for me. I have to that the rawer edge to some of this isn’t quite as effective for me. Still, the songs that are set in that vein have their charms, and the last couple tracks really do a great job of redeeming the whole thing. This is not my favorite set from him, but its mix of downhome textures are intriguing. The soft rock late really brings it home.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2025  Volume 2. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2025.
Track by Track Review
Ten Speed Blues

There is a raw, downhome vibe at play here. We get a bicycle bell at the end.

Backpacking

Not a big change, this one somehow works a little better for me. I like the hooks on the tune.

Lighthearted Happy & High

Even more downhome, the harmonica brings something special to the proceedings.

Where My Treasure Is

The piano and backing vocals bring some added magic to this track. This has a more mainstream soft rock vibe. It’s one of the highlights of the set for me. At times it makes me think of Steve Miller, but I also get some Beatles vibes at points.

Reminisce

This is another that leans toward more mainstream soft rock. It is also another that makes me think of Steve Miller. It’s also a standout cut, making it a great choice to end the album.
