Peggy Lee

The Velvet Lounge: Fever

Review by Gary Hill
Peggy Lee was definitely before my time, but I knew who she was. This collection really made me appreciate her. To me the tracks that work best here are the ones that focus on the jazz meets blues end of the spectrum. Everything here has its merits, though. This is a great collection for an introduction to this artist.

Baby, Baby, Wait For Me

I love the jazz meets blues vibe of this cut. This thing just oozes cool.

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah

While I dig the energetic jazz arrangement and the piano, the chorus of this song grates on me to some degree.

Alright, Okay, You Win

Now, this is more like it. We get some bluesy jazz stylings at the heart of this powerhouse tune.

Goody Goody

The guitar solo on this is so tasty. This is another bluesy, jazzy torch song. It’s also another slab of pure class.

Ghost Riders In The Sky (A Cowboy Legend)

The arrangement on this is a little over the top for me, largely because of the choir. The song isn’t bad, but seems a bit of a stretch. This is a classic tune, but this is from the best arrangement of it I’ve heard.

Johnny Guitar

With some Spanish guitar in the mix, this balladic cut is evocative and powerful.

Lover

The musical arrangement has a fast-paced musical theater vibe. It somewhat overwhelms the vocal performance. It just feels a little too busy.

Everybody Loves Somebody

I have always liked this song. This rendition does it justice. It’s probably not the best version of the tune I’ve heard, but it’s definitely up there.

Why Don't You Do Right

This bluesy tune is another that’s always spoken to me. The recording leaves a little to be desired, but this might be the best version of this song I’ve ever heard. They just nail the vibe and cool so well. I really love the piano work on this.

Hallelujah, I Love Him So

The jazzy groove on this number works really well. There is still some blues in the mix, too.

Every Night

This still has some jazz elements, but it’s closer to a doo wop tune. It works pretty well, but it’s less effective for me than some of the other stuff here.

Uninvited Dreams

Along the lines of the previous cut, this is more balladic than that one. It works a little better, too.

My Man

More pure jazz, I like this one a lot. The horns bring a bit of a Dixieland vibe.

Fever

I have always loved this tune. This version captures the cool and magic of the song so well. This might be my favorite version of it ever.

Light Of Love

This has a gospel sort of groove to it. I’m not crazy about the backing vocals. In general this doesn’t work as well for me as some of the other music here does.

The Glory Of Love

This is a classic song. The big band arrangement on this works pretty well, but it’s a little over the top for me.

Heart (Corazon)

A Latin jazz groove is on the menu here. This is effective, but it’s not one of my favorites here.

The Surrey With The Fridge On The Top

This energetic tune has a musical theater vibe at play. It’s another solid tune, but not a standout.

Them There Eyes

I love the tasty jazz groove on this tune. It’s a highlight of the disc.

I'm Lookin' Out The Window

Slower and mellower, this presents a nice piece of variety. The jazz stylings are in the driver’s seat, but the vocals dominate the mix, as they should.

I Love Being Here With You

This is a smoking hot jazz groove. It’s another standout track.

Jump For Joy

I love the driving jazz groove on this stomping hot tune. This is another highlight of the disc.

Kansas City

A mellow, nearly balladic romp with some definite blues in the mix. I like this one quite a bit. The arrangement gets into some more powerful territory in the instrumental section later. Some of that intensity remains when the vocals return.

Till There Was You

Now, here we get more of a full ballad arrangement. This is pretty and works well.

I'm A Woman

A classic blues romp, I like this rendition a lot.

Sweetheart

This bluesy tune reminds me of “Fever.” It’s a classy number, but not at the same level as that classic.

You Deserve

While not a big change, this works pretty well.

Fever (live)

I prefer the earlier version of this tune this one, but I really dig this one, too.

I Got A Man (I Got A Woman) (live)

Starting on the mellower side, this shifts out after the first vocal section to some driving stuff. I like this, but I wouldn’t consider it a standout.

Yes Indeed! (live)

A driving jazz romp, this is so classy.
