Rockin' With The Krauts - Real Rock 'N' Roll Made In Germany Vol. 4

Review by Gary Hill
Old school rock and roll is on the menu here. That said, most of the lyrics are in German. This set isn’t exactly fine-tuned to my musical tastes, but much of it is effective. If there is a complaint it’s that some of this stuff doesn’t manage to stand out from the pack, and perhaps this would be better with a little less music on it. That said, Bear Family never subscribes to the “less is more” theory in content or packaging.

Track by Track Review
Ralf Bendix & Die Hansen Boys – At The Hop

With the lyrics translated into German, this is interesting. I’m not a fan of doo wop, but they do a good rendition. I really dig the piano work a lot.

Conny Quick – Rock, Baby, Rock

The wailing saxophone on this is a great tune. This is another cover song with the lyrics adapted to German.

Harry Glück – Blue Moon

I really don’t care for the doo wop vocals on this at all. The cut is a fun one, though.

Ted Herold – Ich brauch' keinen Ring (Wear My Ring Around Your Neck)

I really love the energy and groove on this track. It’s fun whether you can understand the lyrics or not. In fact, I’d consider it a standout track here.

The Gisha Brothers – Memphis, Tennessee

Now, the lyrics on this one are in English. This driving old-school rock and roller gets a good live telling here. It’ another highlight.

The Liverpool Beats – Let's Get Together

This is a bluesy rocker with lyrics in English. The harmonica solo is a nice touch.

Benny Quick – Ein Girl, so wie Du (Tough Enough)

We’re back into German lyrics here. This is an energetic and fun rocker.

The Rattles – Shimmy, Shimmy

This is another with English lyrics. It has a cool vintage rock and roll groove. It works well.

Billy Sanders – Ja, so 'ne Party (Let's Have A Party)

The lyrics to this are in German. It’s a doo wop romp that has its charms.

Ronny Twen & Die Perrys – Hipp-Hipp (Runaround Sue)

While nothing surprising, this is reasonably effective.

The Javalins– Caroline (You're So Fine)

Some lyrics are in English and some in German. It’s a mellow doo wop groove that works pretty well.

Peter Kraus – Alle Mädchen wollen küssen

With classical strings and a more balladic and precious arrangement, this one doesn’t work as well for me.

Dieter Kersten & Die Rocking Stars – Kiss Me

Elvis styled rock and roll is on the menu here.

Peter Reese & The Pages – Pages Rhythm

This instrumental makes me think of The Ventures. It’s another highlight here.

Hannes Wüst – Bim Bam

Another solid rock and roller, the saxophone solo is a highlight of the tune.

Paul Kuhn – Die Farbe der Liebe (A White Sports Coat And A Pink Carnation)

A balladic rock and roll groove is on the menu here.

Conny Froboess – Lippenstift am Jacket (Lipstick On Your Collar)

This rock and roller with female lead vocals is fun. The guitar solo really puts it over the top.

Hannes Patek– Susi-Twist (Where Did You Go Last Night)

A bit rawer, the guitar solo on this is on fire. This is old school rock and roll, but it almost has a bit of a punk edge to it.

Harry Glück– Ich find' kein Bett (I Feel So Bad)

While not really a standout, this rock and roller is fairly effective.

The Shouters– Can I Get A Witness

I love the guitar on this track. The bass really screams out, too. This is strong old school rock and roll.

Casey Jones & The Governors– Bumble Bee

This is not anything unexpected, but it is an entertaining rock and roller with lyrics both in German and English.

The Progressives – Matchbox

With lyrics in English, this song makes me think of The Animals. It’s a standout of the set.

Tony Sheridan & The Beat Brothers – Madison Kid

This also has lyrics in English. It’s a classy rock and roller, and I really like the piano and bass work on it a lot.

The King-Beats – Too Much Language Business (Too Much Monkey Business)

The chorus is sung in English. The versies are mere spoken and in German. This is odd tune, but I like it a lot.

Connie Francis – Schöner fremder Mann (Someone Else's Boy)

I don’t think I’ve ever heard Connie Francis sing in German before. The string arrangement on this works well. This is definitely a change from a lot of the other stuff here, but it works really well. It also brings some nice variety to the proceedings.

Paul Kuhn – Midnight

This seems to merge crooner music with rock and roll. It’s reasonably effective.

John Lamers – Bitte bleib bei mir (Lover Please)

Bouncy rock and roll is on the menu here. While this isn’t bad, it is also not a standout.

The Pralins – High Heel Sneakers

With lyrics in English, this is a bouncy and roller that works pretty well.

The Taifuns – Go, Go

The saxophone blows hot and this tune grooves like crazy. The word “go” repeated several times makes up all the lyrics. This is unusual and one of the standout tracks here.

Gust Claer & The Fendermen – Flamingo Twist

Back to German lyrics, this rock and roller is not a highlight, but it works pretty well.

The Flamingos – Mein Beatle Baby (Roll Over Beethoven)

Most of the lyrics are in German, but some are in English. This cut rocks nicely. It has a lot of energy and groove.

Benny Quick – Constantly

The lyrics to this retro ballad are in English. The arrangement is heavy on the organ. This isn’t bad, and it does provide some variety, but I think it was not the best choice as album closer.
