Anthony Phillips

Radio Clyde

Review by Gary Hill

This is a reissue of a 1970s album from former Genesis guitarist Anthony Phillips The original album featured performances recorded live for radio broadcast in Scotland. This version of the release includes a couple bonus tracks that were recorded for a different radio broadcast. The music here all features solo guitar, but some tracks also have vocals. This is an intriguing release, and this new edition has a nice booklet included with it.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2025  Volume 3. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2025.
Track by Track Review
Reaper

Phillips talks for a time about this track before launching into it. The guitar sounds that drive this are so beautiful. This works through a number of changes along the road and covers some excellent ground. It rocks out at times and turns mellower and more introspective at others. This instrumental is strictly solo guitar. It has some Genesis like elements at times.

Moonshooter

The intro on this is shorter. This one has vocals. It’s gentle and balladic as it gets underway. It gets more rocking at times. It’s a mainstream rock tune delivered on acoustic guitar.

Flamingo

I love the intricate and reflective acoustic guitar parts that open this. The cut works out with style and charm as it evolves. That said, it has plenty of sedate moments.  This instrumental piece is dynamic, diverse and so classy. It has a great balance between mellower and more rocking zones.

Conversation Piece

An intricate and pretty instrumental piece, this is a nice respite in some ways because it never rises to the level of “rocking.”

Silver Song

Intricate guitar is a big part of this track. It’s one of the few here with vocals. There are hints of the Beatles along with early Genesis. This one doesn’t work that well for me, though.

Master Of Time

Another track that has vocals, there is a cool melodic rock vibe to this. I like this better than the previous cut.

Which Way The Wind Blows

Not a big change, this is another melodic rock tune. It has a nice balance between mellower and more rocking parts.

Now What (Are They Doing To My Little Friends)?

Another sedate song, this is gentle and pretty. It does get more powered up and involved as it continues.

Field Of Eternity

Intricate acoustic guitar is in the driver’s seat on this mellow instrumental.

Postlude: End Of The Season

This is a very short acoustic guitar number that’s rather pretty.

Extra Tracks

Reaper

Here we get more acoustic guitar magic. There is a short intensification at the end of the number.

Which Way The Wind Blows

This is another version of the tune we heard earlier. This one works well.
