Anthony Phillips

Sail The World Remastered & Expanded Edition

Review by Gary Hill

This album from original Genesis guitarist Anthony Phillips is an instrumental set. It includes both full melodic prog arrangements and keyboard dominated tunes. The original album was recorded as a soundtrack for a BBC presentation of a yacht race. This set includes two CDs. The first is the original album with a few bonus tracks. The second is a full CD of bonuses. This is quite a strong album that is actually one from Phillips’ catalog that really resonates with me.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2025  Volume 3. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2025.
Track by Track Review
CD One

Opening Theme

here is a decent energy and drive to this It’s a cool melodic prog arrangement that works quite well.

Fast Work

More energetic and driving, I like the keyboard work on this a lot, but pretty much everything about this number works really well.

Dark Seas

I really like this ride a lot. It’s pretty fascinating and entertaining. It’s not a big change, though, focusing on the more the instrumental melodic prog we’ve heard so far.

Cool Sailing

The energy and groove on this is great. It’s another strong instrumental melodic prog piece.

Wildlife Choir

Dramatic and pretty flowing keyboard textures are on the menu here. This is a much more atmospheric piece, focusing entirely on the one type of instrument.

I Wish This Would Never End

There is a driving, rocking vibe at the core of this number. It’s not a big change, but the rhythm section is a little more insistent.

Salsa I

As you might guess from the title, this has a Latin, Caribbean vibe to it from the percussion to just about everything else.

Roaring Forties

Keyboard dominated, there is a cool driving rhythm section built into this cut.

Lonely Whales

Here we get another atmospheric keyboard track.

Icebergs

There is a pretty, almost trippy, keyboard vibe here. This is another focuses entirely on that instrument.

Majestic Whales

Atmospheric keyboard vibes are in control here. This is has a real scenic vibe at play.

In the Southern Ocean

Driving, classy progressive rock jamming is on the menu on this number. It’s not a big change from a lot of the rest, but it’s very effective.

The Fremantle Doctor

I really dig the energy and vibe of this one a lot.

Long Way from Home

This is a mellow, keyboard oriented piece of music.

Wildlife Flotilla

There is a little bit of a world music angle to this, but it’s understated. It’s basically another keyboard oriented track.

Big Combers

More energized and driving, this one is all class with its melodic prog stylings.

Cool Sailing II

The energy and groove on this is great. There is a real classic, melodic prog kind of vibe to the song.

Cape Horn

There is a really atmospheric, almost sound effects based vibe to this track. It’s very quiet, but still has some drama to it.

Amongst Mythical Birds

This is a mellow, keyboard based piece of music.

Salsa II

Bouncy Latin grooves are on the menu here. This is another classy instrumental tune.

Into the Tropics

There is a real 80s groove to this in a lot of ways. It has some cool melodic and rhythmic vibes at play.

In the Doldrums

Mellow and rather trippy, this keyboard piece is also classy.

Heading for Home & Victory

This groove has plenty of melodic prog at its heart. It has some hints of Genesis-like music. It also has some rather epic changes and growth.

Extra Tracks

Paradise

I really like the almost fusion vibe to this track.

Eastern Magic

This is another with both great melodies and rhythmic structures. It’s classy.

Closing Theme

There is a great closing vibe to this and a lot of cool melodic and rhythmic grooves.

CD Two

Opening Theme (Original Version)

This works well in this version. It’s much shorter than the version on the other CD, though.

The Dream Race

The energy and drive on this is all class.

Starboard Drift

There is a bouncy sort of back and forth groove here.

Epic Whales

This is extremely dramatic and powerful stuff, while landing in almost classical music territory.

World Piece

Tuned percussion sounds and other keyboard textures drive this one. It’s a particularly effective instrumental and one of my favorite pieces here.

Temple

Chiming bell and gong sounds along with other percussive elements really do make this feel like something you might hear at a temple.

Ocean Life

This is very percussive with keyboard textures adding layers of ambient melody and flavor.

Cool Sailing (Alternate Mix)

Somehow this reminds me a little of the more keyboard oriented era of Van Halen – or should I say “Van Hagar?”

Playmaker

There is a rather triumphant melodic prog vibe at play here. Saxophone brings a hint of jazz and a real 80s sound.

Another Day

With a mellow sense of majesty and beauty on hand, this is another standout track for me. It’s so cool.

Fast Work (Alternate Mix)

This driving techno styled groove is a lot of fun.

Journey's End

Another keyboard based piece, this has some pretty and sedate moments.

Tokyo Nights

Bouncy and playful, this is another classy number.

Paradise (Alternate Mix)

I love the bass sound on this, even if it’s infrequently present. This is a very rhythmic and percussive tune.

Heading for Home & Victory (Alternate Mix)

While I think I prefer the version of this track on the other CD, this one is strong, too.
