The Toadies

Live in Portland, Oregon, October 2017

Review by Larry Toering

Another Toadies show is something I’m always up for, and this night was no exception to that rule. They arrived on a muggy, rainy night of the usual weather pattern in Portland. The Star Theater is a venue they’ve never played here before, as I’ve seen most of their appearances over the years. They put on an energetic performance but there are some differences to point out as they have brought various-different stages to the table over the years.
They were presenting their latest album and it’s a rocking album with some more of their straightforward attitude. It’s almost stripped back in a way that still-keeps them hanging in there with something to say. They’ve been through yet another line-up change, but their songs remain the same. It was as good as to-be expected.

The place was full and that helped them stay energetic, but if you’re looking for classic Toadies it’s not on this tour. Instead the set list relies heavily on newer material and the odd cover. It’s not to say they weren’t in classic form, but if you don’t keep up with them you might not get what you came for.

Instead what they bring is a vibrant thing not found on their last couple of tours, with the lead singer playing plenty of acoustic guitar. They never cease to amaze year after year, release after release. They got to me just as much as any other night, and they brought the house down with several encores and a cover of the Screaming Jay Hawkins classic “I Put A Spell On You.” The band are still worth seeing on this highly recommended tour.
