Paul Butterfield

Paul Butterfield Band - Live At Rockpalast 1978 DVD/CD Set

Review by Gary Hill

This was previously released as two different things. There was a DVD titled "Rockpalast: Blues Rock Legends, Vol. 2 - Paul Butterfield DVD" and an audio CD titled "Rockpalast: Blues Rock Legends." I've reviewed both of them separately, and this is essentially just the two of those things. That said, the audio CD originally included both a short "Rockpalast" theme song and an interview. Those are gone here, leaving just the live performance. Since you still have the interview on the DVD, I think that's a good change, allowing the show to really stand on its own.

Here's what I had to say about the DVD when I reviewed it previously:

"Before this DVD I had heard of Paul Butterfield, but never heard him. First off, my understanding is that Butterfield has done a lot of true blues. I’m not so sure this qualifies. It’s more bluesy rock and roll with some serious soul and funk built into the mix. It’s a scorching performance from 1978. As the title suggests, this was originally from the “Rockpalast” television series in Germany. The sound is not terrible, but also not great. Of course, that’s appropriate for the time period. The same applies to the video. All in all, though, I’m glad there’s a DVD record of this scorching show. I, for one, am going to look into more material from Butterfield. This is an exceptionally hot performance."

This is the overall review from my original review of the CD:

"This is the audio CD companion to the DVD I reviewed in the last issue of Music Street Journal. The disc features some scorching hot live performances that cover a lot of musical territory from blues to funk and rock and even a little country. The recording is good and the performances exceptional."

Having both of these as one combined release makes a lot of sense. It's better this way, and I recommend you pick it up as soon as you can if you dig great blues rock.
