Paul Young

Paul Young & The Royal Family - Live at Rockpalast 1985 DVD/CD set

Review by Gary Hill

I was never really a fan of Paul Young. I can't say that this DVD/CD set has turned me into one. I will say that it's given me more appreciation for his brand of blue-eyed soul. For my money, the best parts of the show are when it gets funky and more up-tempo. The multi-voice vocal arrangements really shine throughout, though. I will say that I thought the video and audio quality would have been better considering that it was recorded for German television. I should clarify that statement. The video is quite good for the time. It's the audio that seems to have issues. There are points where there is distortion that makes it seem that the master-tapes might have been damaged a bit. Still, this is a strong performance, and it mostly makes up for the occasional audio wrinkle. I should add that I really like the bonus interview bit. There is a real sense of fun to it.
