Led Zeppelin

The Song Remains the Same Blu-Ray

Review by Gary Hill

I remember seeing this concert film at a midnight showing in the theater. I had some issues with it at the time. I still have those issues. Personally, I find the fantasy scenes and the cut-aways to the drama about the burglary and bootleg t-shirt dealers take away from the film. I get it, though. They were trying to create something that was bigger than a concert film. I would have preferred more concert footage.

I found that the sound on this Blu-Ray edition is great. The performance is impeccable. I still think Zeppelin was one of the best live bands ever, and I deeply regret never getting to see them live myself. So much has been written about this concert film over the years that it seems redundant to talk all that much about that part of this disc.

What I found especially great here are the bonus features. While some of those, news footage and further details about the burglary don't do a lot for me. However, the bonus songs are completely worth the cost of admission here, and more. We get concert video that was recorded for the film, but never made the cut.

The one complaint specific to this release that I have is that, I wish they had included versions of the songs in the film without the cut-away stuff. I'm guessing that the footage was out there. It would have made great bonus material. Still, this is an in-expensive release to buy these days, and well worth having.
