Cream

Classic Artists DVD (2025)

Review by Gary Hill

This is a reissue of a release from 2005. I didn’t realize that when I sat down to write a review of this. I also didn’t realize that I had previously reviewed that edition. Turns out I did. Here’s what I said about it in that review, “This is an exhaustive documentary. It really showcases a lot of cool things, from early footage, killer interviews and real insights. I’ve always thought Cream were one of the most influential bands of all time, so it’s important to have this release to understand a lot of what came after. I have to say that I never knew about the animosity and troubled relationship between Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce. It’s amazing that these guys ever made such great music together. Apparently, despite working together, some of those animosities are still around (or at least where when this was filmed). It seems a bit long to me, making it a little tedious at times, but otherwise is highly recommended.”

Looking back at that review, I’m shocked that it was the first I’d heard of the contentious relationship between Baker and Bruce. Now it seems to me that I’ve known about that forever. I guess that’s not true and this was my introduction to that information. Beyond that, though, I would say everything I wrote then still applies. I would also add there aren’t any significant bonuses here.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2025  Volume 3. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2025.
